Friday, November 22, 1963, is still remembered by many as the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. On that momentous day, Parlophone released The Beatles' second album. With The Beatles, they picked up where Please Please Me left off, combining more Lennon and McCartney originals with other highlights from their stage show. The album marked the songwriting debut of twenty-year-old guitarist George Harrison. While most of the debut album was completed in a single day, the Beatles had to record their second album in between other duties that included a concert tour, numerous radio and television appearances (including the prestigious Sunday Night At The London Palladium show) and their first international tour to Sweden. It was at this time that the term "Beatlemania" first appeared, which became prominent when they attended the Royal Variety Performance that year, which was attended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. As if that wasn't enough, they also had to write, record and promote three new top forty-five songs, all of which reached number one in the UK charts. None of the tracks from With The Beatles were released as singles in the UK and Robert Freeman's striking black and white cover was groundbreaking for a pop album too. With The Beatles reached number one in the UK, replacing Please Please Me, and remained there for 21 of the 51 weeks it spent in the top 20. Like Please Please Me, it was not released in the US until 1987, but the cover photo was used on their debut album Meet The Beatles for Capitol Records, which contained nine tracks from the UK release and three additional songs, including their first US hit "I Want To Hold Your Hand".
