Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the group's eighth album, was released on June 1, 1967 and became the soundtrack to the "Summer of Love," but its impact is timeless.Work on the record began in late 1966, and at one point it was thought that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever would be included, but when they were released as singles in February, the idea was abandoned, with Revolver completed just in time for the band to leave for their next tour. Now that the tour was over, they could spend more time writing and recording. From November 1966 to April 1967 they spent over 400 hours in the studio, a big difference from the Please Please Me days.The music was obviously more complex and after the tour was over there was no need to think about what to perform in front of a live audience.In the studio the Beatles encouraged George Martin to achieve the "impossible" and George and the engineers in turn found innovative ways to do this, even though they were still using only four-track equipment.Not only was the music different, exciting and varied, but so was the way it was presented. On the glossy double cover, the boys in Pepper uniforms were surrounded by pictures of people they admired or were interested in, and on the back cover were the lyrics to all the songs. On the back cover were the lyrics to all the songs. Inside each side of the sleeve was another surprise, a card with various cut-outs and, at least on the first pressings, the inner paper sleeve had a psychedelic design.The album went to number one in the UK and spent a total of 27 weeks at the top of the charts from June 1967 to February 1968, an initial run of 148 weeks. This was despite a ban on the BBC's "A Day In The Life" programme.
