The Animals were an English rock band of the 1960s.
The Animals formed in 1962 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and played in London from 1964. Their music was heavily influenced by folk and blues. Their first single was a cover of Bob Dylan's Baby Let Me Take You Home. The next single, The House of the Rising Sun, was a huge success in America. The singles I'm Crying, Boom Boom, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood and Bring It On Home To Me followed before keyboardist Alan Price left.
A new band was formed in July 1965, with Dave Rowberry on piano. Hits We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, It's My Life, Inside Looking Out and Don't Bring Me Down followed. See See Rider (1966) reached number one on the Canadian singles chart. In September, the group abruptly broke up and Burdon recorded a solo album, whose single "Help Me Girl" sold well, unlike the album.
He immediately put together a new band. They were now called Eric Burdon & The New Animals (or simply "The New Animals"). After performances in Germany and Australia, they participated in the Monterey Pop Festival in March 1967 and released the single "When I Was Young" in April. As the main exponents of the flower power and psychedelia movement, Eric Burdon & The Animals recorded the singles San Franciscan Nights, Good Times, Monterey, Sky Pilot and Ring of Fire with a revamped line-up. In February 1969, the group finally broke up and its members attempted a solo career.
While Burdon found his new direction with the funk group War, the independent musicians toured under the name The Animals. After multiple cover versions used the name and no rights to it existed until then, the five original members decided to record a new album. This took place in December 1975. However, due to copyright issues, it was not released until 18 months later. Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted was well received.
In 1983, by which time Burdon and Price had already had successful solo careers and Chandler had produced not only Jimi Hendrix but also Slade, the five original members recorded another album, Ark. The album did not meet with a favourable critical reception, but achieved considerable sales and the single The Night was released from it later that year and went on to hit the US charts.
Their world tour continued until early 1984. Chandler announced in the press that the group was breaking up again due to Burdon's behaviour. Price would, however, record with him again because, in his opinion, he was the best white singer ever. A live album, Rip it to Shreds - Greatest Hits Live, followed in August.
Product information. "Animalisms" is a rare treat for fans of this outstanding British R&B group. This was their third studio album, first released in 1966, and was full of blues standards recorded in the States with top producer Tom Wilson. This important reissue now serves as a memorial to former band members Dave Rowberry, who died in 2003, and Chase Chandler, who died in 1996. We've added 13 bonus tracks to the CD - chart successes and rarities from Decca's 1966 EP. A special bonus section features four stereo tracks from the US version of "Animalization". Not long after the release of "Animalisms" the band broke up, so here are the young Animals in their prime, enjoying one last rave up.
Album spans genres Rock, Funk / Soul, Beat, Rhythm & Blues, Blues Rock, Rock & Roll and Mod.
