A perfect, hour-long collection of songs in quiet, earthy tones: Acoustic guitars played with fingers, pianos playing melancholy figures (the track "Tolerate It" vaguely recalls the Smiths' "Asleep"), electric guitars bordering on overdriven, warm, washed-out synths and mandolin. Evermore effectively continues the work begun by Folklore, taking Swift away from mainstream pop and into alt-rock waters. It's a smoother and less forced transition than some of her peers.
