SOAD cannot be mediocre, as a music journalist once aptly said. Already their debut album "System Of A Down", produced by mixing desk legend Rick Rubin in 1998, has become a masterpiece of metal and is considered one of the key works of the genre. A tour in support of Slayer followed. The Los Angeles quartet's music blends various styles with heavy metal, sometimes in bizarre ways, including hip hop, punk, jazz, gothic and Armenian folk. The latter is due to the fact that all the musicians have Armenian ancestry. Their second album "Toxicity" from 2001 shines again with deadly riffs, brutal rhythms and really explicit lyrics. In 14 songs, the quartet attacks everything that is conspicuous between drug dealers and the US government. Some might say that Rage Of The Machine send their regards - but System Of A Down are only just shifting into second gear, whereas RATM are... "Toxicity" was followed by the LP "Steal This Album!" (2002), "Mezmerize" and "Hynotize" (both 2005). In mid-2006 the band decided to take a break and focus on solo projects and family. Guitarist Daron Malakian leaves it open as to when they will resume, "It's a long way off, if it ever happens."
