The brains behind the Steely Dan project, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, were known for scaring their studio musicians with merciless criticism. Guitarist Dean Parks described their style as "a step beyond perfection". Arrangements were perfected to absolute perfection - only to be destroyed and re-recorded at the end so as not to lose the looseness. Besides the brilliant music, this will to perfection is one of the reasons why "Aja" was an indispensable part of hi-fi projections in the 70s and 80s. The recording team around renowned sound engineer Roger Nichols was made up of giants of the sound industry: Bill Schnee, Al Schmitt and Elliot Scheiner. The meticulous recording with attention to detail renders every note crystal clear and all instruments are perfectly placed.
