Begleitet wird der Tenor-Saxophonist von Tommy Flanagan am Klavier, Doug Watkins am Bass und Max Roach am Schlagzeug. Saxophone Colossus is one of Sonny Rollins' most acclaimed albums as a leader. It was recorded on June 22, 1956, by which time the saxophonist had been a permanent member of the famous Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet for six months. This fact also explains Roach's presence. Four days later, the group would no longer exist, because on June 26, Clifford Brown and the group's pianist Ritchie Powell were both killed in a tragic car accident. At the age of 26, Rollins was already a well-known jazz personality. He had several albums under his belt as a leader, but most importantly he was a member of one of the most important combos of the time: the Miles Davis Quintet. Saxophone Colossus enjoyed great critical success from the start and helped Rollins establish himself as a major jazz artist. The album features Rollins at the head of an all-star quartet that includes pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Doug Watkins and, as noted, drummer Max Roach.
