Formed in 1980 in the New York art and post-punk scene, Sonic Youth quickly became a leader in the American underground scene. They have always tried to relate to the art scene, including through their cover design, which was based on the work of Gerhard Richter and Raymond Pettibon. The cover of their 16th album was designed by artist and guitarist John Fahey (1939-2001).
