Slayer's fourth album South of Heaven was released on July 7, 1988. The album was Slayer's first album released on Def Jam Recordings and was produced by Rick Rubin. South of Heaven was the first Slayer album to feature drummer Dave Lombardo, and was also the first Slayer album to feature guitarist Jeff Hanneman singing on the track "Mandatory Suicide". The album was also the last album by the band to feature singer Tom Araya on bass guitar. South of Heaven received mixed to positive reviews from music critics. Steve Huey of AllMusic gave the album four and a half stars out of five, stating, "On Slayer's fourth album, the band began to smooth out its attack, adding more melody and structure to its music while retaining its trademark rawness". Blabbermouth.net gave the album eight stars out of ten and stated, "South of Heaven is Slayer 's most musical album. The songs are still fast and aggressive, but they also have more groove than the band's previous efforts."
