Slayer's fifth studio album Seasons in the Abyss was released on October 9, 1990. It was the band's first album to be released on Rick Rubin's Def label and the first to feature drummer Paul Bostaph. The album debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200 chart, selling over 33,000 units in the United States in its first week. The album was positively reviewed by critics, with Steve Huey of AllMusic stating that "Seasons in the Abyss is Slayer's most musically consistent album, and perhaps their darkest and most sinister". The album was nominated for a 1991 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance, but lost to Metallica's own album. The album's title track was released as a single in 1990 and the video for it was directed by Thomas Mignone. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1991. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on November 13, 1995 and has since gone platinum.
