British heavy metal legends Saxon are releasing a great album of cover versions aptly titled Inspirations. Eleven brand new tracks that bring together the great rock classics that influenced Biff Byford and his band. From the Beatles' melodic Paperback Writer to Jimi Hendrix's Stone Free, Saxon show their love and appreciation with their tributes, some of which are raw but always true to the original song. They constantly had the old school idea in mind in the sense that they used Marshall cables, Marshall amps and a real drum kit. Biff Byford produced the whole thing and Jacky Lehmann engineered and mixed the recordings. The approach to Motörhead's Bomber (with added whistle), for example, or even AC/DC's Problem Child, Black Sabbath's Evil Woman and Deep Purple's noisy Speed King, were all recorded with a refreshing warmth, unfiltered and vintage sounding. "We wanted to record an album that showcased our influences, the songs and bands that inspired us to write the Saxon songs we wrote and are still writing. It was interesting to see what else my voice could do because some of these songs I had never sung before," Biff said.
