Sam Cooke, the inventor and true king of soul, recorded "Mr. Soul" the same year as "Night Beat" and created its more mature counterpart with mostly soul ballads. Relaxed tempos and sweeping arrangements form the foundation over which Sam soars with his slightly melancholic voice, creating a mood that can heal any broken heart. On standards like "Willow Weep For Me," "I Wish You Love" and "For Sentimental Reasons," Cooke shows his quiet, emotional side without losing his feel for the great melodies, which he carries with the power of his voice without being obtrusive. If Sam Cooke had lived longer we would have more music of this rare quality, but as it is we have to make do with the treasures he has left us. And now, for the first time in over 30 years, Music On Vinyl is releasing a remastered reissue of 'Mr. Soul'.
