The evocative power of this work will not escape even those who rarely listen to classical music: Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake goes far beyond the seemingly innocuous fairy tale plot. At least since the cinematic hit Black Swan starring Natalie Portman, we know that there is a real psychodrama going on - a story of betrayal, love and magic. Andre Previn's Swan Lake from 1976 is now finally being released on 180 gram vinyl, a truly legendary recording of this work. The conductor, a self-described "romantic to the core", has found one of his showpieces in Tchaikovsky's famous score, bursting with orchestral colour and great melodic arcs. At the time of the recording, the American was at the height of his international career, particularly through his work with the London Symphony Orchestra, of which he was then chief conductor. His complete recording of Swan Lake has become a jewel in the history of recordings, which can now be enjoyed again in special vinyl sound. Tchaikovsky's work is also considered the perfect expression of the romantic story ballet. Since its premiere in 1895 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, it has triumphed around the world and inspired generations of dancers and choreographers.
