Face Value is the debut solo album by English singer-songwriter Phil Collins , released on 13 February 1981. The album was a huge commercial success and reached number one in several countries. It spawned several hit singles, including the UK number one "In the Air Tonight". Collins began writing songs for this album in late 1979, after leaving the rock band Genesis. Many of the songs were written in response to the personal turmoil he was experiencing at the time. The album's lyrics deal with themes of abandonment, betrayal and loneliness. The album's music is a blend of pop, soul and rock. Collins enlisted the help of several top session musicians to record the album, including drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Daryl Stuermer, who later joined Collins in Genesis. The album Face Value was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one in several countries and spawning several hit singles. The album was certified platinum six times by the RIAA and sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. It is widely regarded as Collins' best album.
