Pantera's album Far Beyond Driven, released in 1994, was a critical and commercial success. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and has since been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. Music critics praised Far Beyond Driven for its heavy sound and aggressive lyrics. The album has been cited as an influence by many heavy metal bands. The album Far Beyond Driven features Pantera's signature groove metal sound , which is characterized by heavy riffs and down-tuned guitars.
