The unique twenty-six-year-old Simone, who made her New York concert debut in 1959. Her childhood dream was to become a classical piano star, but racism forced her to play in bars. So Simone recalled that when she finally got into the prestigious concert hall, she "walked like an Egyptian queen - slowly, quietly and gravely", hardly able to believe that there were finally no cigarettes to distract patrons and no out-of-tune piano. Backed by Jimmy Bond on bass and Al Heath on drums, Simone shows off a blend of her untamed, fiery power (she already sounds like she's lived many lives) and surprising subtlety on a mix of personal classics like The Other Woman and ballads like Black Is the Colour of My True Love's Hair and Billie Holiday's Fine and Mellow. The whole set also offers much more of her very distinctive piano improvisational approach - classical and jazz phrasing often explicitly wrestle with each other - than is the case on her later albums. Thunderous chords burst from the whispering piano opening of Summertime, Cotton Eye Joe is played as a passionate reflection, and Return Home is a thunderous piece of Simone sacred rolling, her voice screaming and cracking over frantic chord work.
