The Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island was first held in 1954 and quickly established itself as one of America's premier summer jazz events. The festival became a hot spot for well-known jazz greats and newcomers alike, and on June 30, 1960, Nina Simone performed at the 7th annual Newport Jazz Festival. Unfortunately, the festival was plagued by young hooligans that year and some performances had to be cancelled due to clashes with police and other festival goers. However, Nina Simone was as confident as ever on stage and the audience was thrilled with her performance. Six years later, she returned to Newport and played another concert at the festival in front of 15,000 enthusiastic fans.
