"Little Girl Blue", released in 1957, was Nina Simone's first recording, originally released by Bethlehem. Accompanied by bassist Jimmy Bond and Albert "Tootie" Heath, Simone showcases her mysterious and sultry-sounding melodic voice, a lively and confident jazz style, and a mysterious yet down-to-earth sensibility. The album also features an outstanding jazz pianist. Simone was a skilled improviser, but she never strayed from the blues. The opening track is a good example of this, her interpretation of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" snapping her fingers and swaying while the phrasing remains deeply rooted in the blues. For contrast, she follows with a version - if not outright ultimate - of Willard Robison's scorching ballad on the theme of "leaving a lover/loved one," "Don't Smoke in Bed." The title track, from the pens of Rodgers and Hart, "Good King Wenceslas," is a classic prelude to one of the most beautiful pop ballads ever written. It is followed by the funky swing of "Love Me Or Leave Me" with a haunting little piano solo in the transition where Bach meets Horace Silver and Bobby Timmons. It's also interesting to note that although this is Simone's first recording, it presents an artist who seems to have matured into her full glory on stage; for the first time, many of the hallmarks that have characterized Simone throughout her career, not only as a singer and pianist, but also as an arranger, are on display here. "My Baby Just Cares For Me" has a sweeping shuffle that continues into a piano interlude. She puts her skills, both instrumental and improvisational, to best use in Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait," which transforms from its originally intended bebop into a classical piece. "You'll Never Walk Alone" is more reminiscent of a stately gospel song than the musical tune originally written by Rodgers & Hammerstein. And of course, one of Simone's signature tunes was her version of "I Loves You, Porgy," heard here for the first time and released as a single. Her own "Central Park Blues" is one of the most beautiful jazz tunes on this record. Recording: 1957
