In the music business, we are often faced with the problem of where to place an artist. For many music fans, the real problem is just trying to place a musician in a category! "Let the music speak for itself," they all exclaim. If only life were that simple! Imagine walking into a record store and everything is listed alphabetically. Before you get to Nina Simone, you have to dig through a lot of stuff that starts with "s". At least in the jazz section you know where to find John Coltrane or Miles Davis. And so we get closer to our problem: where to put Nina Simone? This is a great artist who basically draws from classical, gospel and blues, yet in our selection she is undoubtedly singing jazz. A bit like Ray Charles, we thought, who moves across many genres! So it's jazz. We present four of Nina's early albums, which are a mixture of studio and live recordings. Her style at this early stage was decidedly more jazzy, based on gospel and blues, before veering towards soul and even pop later in her career.
