"This album will send you straight to the deepest catacombs, where the song structures will have a brutal psychological effect on you until you scream: 'Yes, this hurts - please hit me again with such merciless harshness!'" (Karl Sanders) Formed in 1993 by Karl Sanders (guitar/vocals), Chief Spires (bass/vocals) and Pete Hammoura (drums), NILE soon began to combine their interest in Egyptian history, culture and ancient legends with the ferocity of modern death metal. With a symphonic approach to songwriting and arrangement, NILE launched an uncompromising assault, fusing technical death metal and Middle Eastern melodies into a furious whole. Their unique lyrical direction was based on Sander's interpretations of ancient Egyptian temple inscriptions, papyri, hieroglyphics and tomb paintings depicting ancient battles, rituals and religious ceremonies. In this style, the band created a number of classic technical death metal tracks after the arrival of Dallas Toler-Wade in 1996, starting with the debut "Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka", through the highly successful follow-up "Black Seeds Of Vengeance" ("Album Of The Year 2000" by the British magazine Terrorizer) to the 2002 opus "In Their Darkened Shrines". Three years later, "Annihilation Of The Wicked" reached another milestone in NILE's career, when the disc climbed to a phenomenal 27th place in the Swedish album chart! The later addition of sensational drummer George Kollias to the band further strengthened the already stellar line-up of musicians. In 2007, the fifth studio album "Ithyphallic" saw the light of day, which also marked NILE's debut on Nuclear Blast and conquered charts around the world, including the German album chart at #76 and the US Billboard chart at #76. The last hint of life came in 2009 with the release of another masterpiece titled "Those Whom The Gods Detest". In the summer of 2012, NILE will take you into the depths of their sinister catacombs where they will torture your souls with the blackest sounds in a long time! Sound-wise, "At The Gate Of Sethu" can be considered a bit of a throwback to the era of "Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka" or "In Their Darkened Shrines" - frontman Karl Sanders delivers the most gut-wrenching vocals of his career, while his allies build massive walls of sound around you of anguish and desolation that are impossible to escape. Overall, At The Gate Of Sethu were formed true to the credo that Karl sums up with these words: "We pursue a high and pure goal - to create music that plants delirious emotions in the hearts, minds and ears of listeners!" Mission accomplished! (nuclearblast. de) Review "The somewhat bizarre difference between technical death and progressive metal is roughly that with the former you have to put ferocious choking strictly at the service of brutality. Not that I want to claim that the new Nile At The Gates Of Sethu album is now suddenly melodic in the classical sense - but it's the first of the Yanks to which I would ascribe clear progressive traits. The drums are lightning fast but no longer explode unbridled, the riffs play a supporting role and there's an obscure but charming neo-antic production that reminds me of late Death: Quo vadis, Nile? Now all of this is a bit of an exaggeration, because of course the band's many traditions are not missing, pseudo-Egyptian bombast, mythological motifs, oriental pans - and spectacular songs like 'Tribunal Of The Dead'." Metal Hammer, Robert Müller "On the new LPm album they once again beat furiously and briskly, as if they were on speed. Due to the partially extreme complexity of the songs, they mercilessly glimpse better times. With this album, however, Nile are playing at the top of the extreme metal league." EMP | Jürgen Tschamler "The most fantastic tracks - such as 'When My Wrath Is Done' - are at once progressively melodic, barrel-chested and set among atmospheric-oriental interludes that literally resurrect unspeakable cults before the inner eye. Majestic, sophisticated, mysterious: The Nile is and will remain untouchable." BLAST, Nadine Fiebig
