The band originally consisted of singer and guitarist Leslie West, bassist and vocalist Felix Pappalardi, keyboardist Steve Knight, and drummer N. D. Smart (who was soon replaced by Corky Laing). The group broke up in 1972 and reunited frequently from 1973 onwards. Best known for their chime-laden "Mississippi Queen" and the heavily sampled "Long Red" and for their appearance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, Mountain is one of many bands generally credited with influencing the development of heavy metal music in the 1970s. The band still exists today with Phil Baker (vocals and guitar), Joe Venti (vocals and bass) and Laurence "Corky" Laing (drums).
