The album was released on 3 March 2008 on Steamhammer/SPV. The album was recorded in front of a sold out audience and features 16 live tracks. It was the band's first live album in 17 years and the last to feature drummer Mikkey Dee, who left the band in December 2015. The album charted at number 48 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was met with mixed to positive reviews from music critics. Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic awarded the album three and a half stars out of five, stating that "Better Motörhead Than Dead - Live At Hammersmith" is a "damn fine Motörhead live album". Rivadavia went on to say that the album "serves as a fitting epitaph for the band's longtime drummer Mikkey Dee, while also reminding us how good Motörhead can be when they're going full blast".
