An utterly exceptional piece of work, it reached number one in the UK charts and the US Top 20 when it was released in 1995. The single The More You Ingore Me, The Closer I Get reached the UK Top 10 (the only Morrissey single to do so in the 1990s) and number 46 on the US Billboard chart! Most fans to this day agree that Vauxhall And I is Morrissey's best album. Unlike its guitar-laden and noisy studio predecessor, Your Arsenal, Morrissey and his two new co-writers Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer have created a flawless pop album full of brilliant and melodic songs, excellent arrangements and rather likable melodies - one of the best he has ever recorded. Vauxhall And I can be seen as a liberating blow: after years of frustration at the misinterpretation of his songs and aesthetic, and the loss of some of his closest contemporaries, including Mick Ronson, who produced Your Arsenal, Morrissey has come to terms with himself on Vauxhall And I.
