Black Beauty, Miles Davis At Fillmore West, was recorded on April 10, 1970 at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, where Davis was opening for the Grateful Dead. The recording was made shortly after his classic studio album Bitches Brew. The album was not released in Japan until 1973. Black Beauty is a true jazz-rock album and a period document of Miles' early electro-jazz period when he opened for a rock band. He and his band (saxophonist Steve Grossmann, bassist Dave Holland, keyboardist Chick Corea, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Airto Moreira) played a full setlist at the Fillmore West: "Directions", "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down", "Willie Nelson", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Sanctuary", "It's About That Time", "Bitches Brew", "Masqualero", "Spanish Key" and "Theme". The songs were played one after the other as one long piece. Davis adopted this peculiarity in 1967. He later explained in his autobiography that it gave him more room for improvisation. The LP is accompanied by the original booklet of the Japanese edition.
