Tubular Bells II (1992) closely followed the structure of the first, but dealt with different themes and musical influences. This was followed by The Songs of Distant Earth (1994), based on the novel by Arthur C. Clarke's Celtic-folk Voyager and Tubular Bells III, which featured techno and dance music influences from his then-home of Ibiza. In 1999, Mike Oldfield released Guitars, an album on which he created all the sounds using guitars. In May 2003, to mark his 50th birthday and the 30th anniversary of Tubular Bells, he released Tubular Bells 2003, a reissue of his debut album. Oldfield explained that this allowed him to improve on the many imperfections of the original, which were caused by the recording technology of the time and the time-consuming nature of studio recording (the first side of the mega-album had to be recorded in just one week in 1973).
