Metallica : Through the Never is a soundtrack album by American heavy metal band Metallica , released on September 24, 2013. The album is the band's first release of original material since 2008's Death Magnetic and is also the first Metallica album to feature bassist Robert Trujillo. The album was produced by Rick Rubin, who had previously worked with the band on ...And Justice for All (1988) and Death Magnetic. The music for the album was written for the 2013 3D film Metallica : Through the Never, with story by drummer Lars Ulrich and actor Dane DeHaan. The film follows DeHaan's character Trip, a young boxer sent on a mission to retrieve a bag of items from Metallica' stage show, during which he becomes involved in a surreal adventure. The first single from the album, the track "Lords of Summer", was released on June 17, 2014. The album received universally positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 73, which means "generally favorable" based on 10 reviews.
