Metallica's eighth studio album St. Anger was released on June 5, 2003. The album was produced by Bob Rock, who had worked with the band on their 1991 album of the same name and 1996 album Load. The album's lead single, "St. Anger", was released on May 6, 2003. The album received mixed reviews from music critics. Some praised the album for its raw sound, while others criticized it for its lack of melody and uninspiring lyrics. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 640,000 copies in its first week. It has since been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. The Canadian Recording Industry Association awarded the album double platinum. It has also been awarded a gold record by the British Phonographic Industry Association and the Australian Recording Industry Association. The album received a platinum record from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. More than six million copies of the album have been sold worldwide.
