Metallica : S&M is an album recorded by Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in 1999. It is a live album of Metallica songs , accompanied by a symphony orchestra. The album was recorded at the Berkeley Community Theatre in Berkeley, California on April 21 and 22, 1999. The album was released on November 23, 1999 by Elektra Records. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold over 320,000 copies in its first week. On December 13, 1999, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has since been certified double platinum. The album was met with mixed reviews from music critics. Some praised the album for its unique and ambitious sound, while others criticized it for its lack of originality. The album was nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 43rd Grammy Awards, but lost to Eric Clapton's "Layla". Metallica : S&M is cited as one of the best live albums of all time.
