Garage Inc. is a compilation album by American heavy metal band Metallica , released on November 17, 1998. The album is a double album and features cover versions of songs by artists who have influenced Metallica , as well as songs originally recorded by Metallica and released as B-sides to their singles. The album was produced by Bob Rock, who had worked with the band on their 1991 album of the same name. Garage Inc. was Metallica's first release on Elektra Records after previously releasing the album on Warner Bros. Records since the band's inception. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 598,000 copies in its first week in the United States. On December 16, 1998, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has since been certified double platinum. The album Garage Inc. was met with universally positive reviews from music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "an excellent compilation", while Jon Pareles of The New York Times stated that the album shows "the range and power of Metallica 's music".
