The album contains Carey's greatest hits from her 1990 debut album Mariah Carey to her 2010 studio album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, and three new songs, "The Star", "When Christmas Comes" and "All I Want for Christmas Is You (Extra Festive)". Upon its release, Mariah Carey's The Essential received generally mixed reviews from music critics. However, the album was commercially successful, debuting at number three on the US Billboard 200 chart and eventually earning a platinum record from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
