The well-known young Salzburg violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger and the internationally renowned Beethoven specialist Michael Korstick at the piano will present the complete violin sonatas and three other works by Ludwig van Beethoven. This new complete recording has also been recorded on video and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. Beethoven's first three violin sonatas, Op. 12/1-3, written in 1797-98, already contain distinct elements of later compositional practice and have accordingly demanded the critical ear of contemporary audiences. According to musicologists, Violin Sonatas No. 4, Op. 23 and No. 5, Op. 24 are closely related to Beethoven's love affairs. For example, the former seems to portray the dark side of love, while the "Spring Sonata", which was later so titled, refers to the beautiful, amorous side of love. The three sonatas Op. 30/1-3, written in 1802, when the "Heiligenstadt Testament" was also written, reflect Beethoven's mental states and are characterised by mood swings. Perhaps the most famous is the 'Kreutzer Sonata' No. 9 in A major, Op. 47, which its dedicatee, the French violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer, once described as unplayable. By contrast, Beethoven's last violin sonata, No. 10 in G major, Op. 96, strikes a more intimate tone and was once hailed by critics as "the most poetic, musically delicate" of his sonatas. Thomas Albertus Irnberger and Michael Korstick also present the variations "Se vuol ballare" WoO 40 on the theme from W. A. Mozart's opera "The Marriage of Figaro". The Rondo in G major, WoO 41, and the Six German Dances, WoO 42, were composed in 1794/96 and have a light and almost youthfully cheerful feel - which Irnberger and Korstick's performers also manage to do "with ease".
