The Berlin premiere of Beethoven André Cluytens: Beethoven's symphonies 1957-1960 in a new remastering Classical music quiz question: who conducted the first complete recording of Beethoven's symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic? Some would guess Herbert von Karajan or Wilhelm Furtwängler. The correct answer, however, brings into focus a conductor who is less well-known, yet has left many important traces internationally. The cycle was recorded between 1957 and 1960 by Belgian-born André Cluytens, ensuring a milestone in recording history in the early years of the stereo age that should be commemorated in Beethoven's year 2020. Now reissued in a modern remastering in a 5-CD box set. Beethoven's symphonies are an absolute staple of the repertoire of the Berlin Philharmonic, who made the first ever orchestral recording of the Fifth Symphony in 1913. Cluytens combined this great tradition with his distinctive, extremely engaging and contoured style, working out all the nuances of the instrumental colours. In these recordings, which even after more than sixty years captivate with their immense freshness and power, he shows himself to be a great master of the German repertoire. The conductor, who was born in 1905, first worked in France in various opera houses, concentrated on the French repertoire and also took French citizenship. The complete recording of the symphony is accompanied by some of Beethoven's most famous overtures.
