Broken Heart Syndrome is not a made-up disorder. It's a shock to the senses, an emotional burnout.... It weakens the heart's main pumping chamber, which is triggered by intense emotional stress: an earthquake, a natural disaster, or something less (literally) earth-shattering, like losing a loved one or suffering from being rejected by a lover. Modern science has not yet found a cure. Tako Tsubo is an album about a breakup, and the romantic line of "Matahari," based on the idea of an idealized heroine, has given way to a landscape more grounded in reality. L'Impératrice have certainly retained their penchant for dance, grooving to virtuoso bass, vintage synths and shimmering melodies. But they gave themselves the freedom to explore other lands, to step aside. As for the elegance of the production, L'Impératrice teamed up again with Renaud Letang (Jarvis Cocker, Liane La Havas, Feist) and the mighty Neal Pogue (Outkast, Stevie Wonder, Tyler the Creator) handled the mix. Perhaps most surprising is the deep exploration of the pathways of the heart, especially the left ventricle. Ambivalent love, euphoria, sadness and madness: so many symptoms that together point to a bad dose of Tako Tsubo. It is a syndrome that leaves the heart damaged, flooded, swollen. And more alive than ever.
