It's surprising how well Keb' Mo's cover versions of nine classic protest and peace songs on "Peace ... Back by Demand" fits into the current political climate. The songs themselves are the stars on this album, and Keb' Mo' takes a wise, quiet, and restrained approach to each of them, preferring the messages to a light soul-jazz backdrop with just enough funk in the horns in between to give the arrangements a bit of momentum. It's hard to say anything about the song selection, but as a performer Mo' rarely makes any of them his own, behind every one there's a crystal clear memory of the original version. It's clear that Mo' is in no way trying to top the charts, and his efforts to put these important songs in a new light are commendable. "Peace...Back by Popular Demand" isn't one of the great albums, but it has something to say, or in this case, rather remind us, and serves as a reminder that every age deserves peace and can use it.
