The Dreaming is the fourth studio album by English singer-songwriter Kate Bush , released on 18 October 1982 by EMI Records. It was Bush's first album since her 1978 debut and her first release after a three-year hiatus. The album was produced by Bush and Jon Kelly. The Dreaming received mixed reviews from music critics, who were ambivalent about its unconventional production and dark themes. It became Bush's first album to reach number one in the UK, and has since gone triple platinum from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The album spawned four singles, including the UK number one hit "Running Up That Hill". Bush has described The Dreaming as her most personal album, stating that it is about "the need to escape" The album's title track "The Dreaming" is based on Aboriginal mythology and its lyrics relate to the Australian landscape and dreamtime. Other songs on the album deal with various dark themes, including mental illness, murder and sexual violence.
