The new release marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most enigmatic and sonically compelling bands of the dark rock/prog genre. Mnemosynean contains an extensive collection of all the rarities and B-sides of Catatonia, including tracks from the band's numerous EPs, limited special editions, cover versions and a number of collaborative remixes. The journey of "Mnemosynean" ranges from the gothic, experimental epic "Scarlet Heavens", recorded in 1994, to tracks recorded during the recording of the excellent 2016 album "The Fall of Hearts". The intriguing title "Mnemosynean" itself means memories and was chosen because inscriptions on tombs dating back to 400 BC state that the dead could retain memories by drinking not from the River Lethe, but from the river flowing from Lake Mnemosyne (the goddess of memory). The Mnemosynean package includes a new biography of the band written by music journalist Eleanor Goodman, as well as the complete lyrics and background to the songs, as described by founding members Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse, as well as other close associates of Katatonia. The artwork for this release was designed by longtime Katatonia artist Travis Smith.
