Product information:The fourth half-dozen volumes of the Ancerl Gold series are characterised by a fine balance of style and programme, in addition to the representativeness that accompanies the entire series. Specifically, this batch contains three titles of Czech music alongside three other albums of works from the world repertoire; in addition, this volume presents a tasteful mix of purely symphonic music, concert works, and vocal sacred productions. Romantic souls will delight in the presentation here of a Dvořák title composed in one of Ančerl's most artistically eloquent creations from a dazzling parade of works, including the popular Carnival Overture, with its palette of moods revolving alternately around Bacchus and Pan, and the Sixth Symphony, with one of Dvořák's most august Furiant Dance numbers. The legendary comeback here is marked by a reissue of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto in B minor with Sviatoslav Richter, followed no less spectacularly by a concert violin exhibition by Bartók specialist Andre Gertler. A true musical feast is celebrated by Ancerl's reading of Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony. The high emotionality and tragic drama of Shostakovich's work can hardly be more believable anywhere than here, as performed by a conductor whose bitter wartime experience followed him for the rest of his life. While the originality of the compositional idioms of Janáček and Martinů is clearly evident after the first bars of their music, the artistic legacy of Ladislav Vycpalek ranks alongside the most profound expressions of the philosophical spirit in Czech music and is sure to pleasantly surprise the discerning music lover in particular.
