Sad Wings of Destiny is the second studio album by British heavy metal band Judas Priest , released in 1976. The album is cited as a major influence on the development of the heavy metal genre. The album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, Wales. It was produced by Rodger Bain, who also produced Black Sabbath's first two albums. The cover artwork was created by Hipgnosis and features a fallen angel. The album was originally released in the United Kingdom on 27 March 1976 by CBS Records and in the United States on 1 April 1976 by Columbia Records. It was later re-released on CD in the United States in 1990 by Columbia Records. The album Sad Wings of Destiny was well received by music critics. In a contemporary review for Rolling Stone magazine, music journalist Lester Bangs called the album "an incredibly powerful work" and "one of the best heavy metal albums ever made". In a retrospective review, AllMusic critic Eduardo Rivadavia called it "a genre-defining classic" and "one of the most influential heavy metal albums of all time". The album was a commercial success, reaching number 6 on the UK Albums Chart and number 62 on the UK Albums Chart.
