In March 2017, organist and harpsichordist Peter Kofler launched his current Bach project: a complete recording of the organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Unlike previous complete recordings, Kofler has opted for a "modern" instrument for this project. J.S. Bach was not only a composer of the great polyphonic epoch, but also an innovator and a source of inspiration, especially in the field of organ music. The introduction of tempered tuning, the virtuoso use of the organ pedal or the development of the piano: Bach played a decisive role in this and was one of the first to take advantage of modern developments. The four-manual Rieger organ in the Jesuit Church of St. Michael in Munich, with its 75 stops, has many of the qualities Bach appreciated. In addition to the imposing fortissimo, it is characterised by many characteristic traces of timbre, some of which the Thomaskantor of Leipzig could only dream of. Recording technology: a world premiere The Auro-3D high-resolution process is used for the first time in the production of the organ, a consistent continuation of earlier surround sound formats such as 5.1, 7.1 or 2+2+2. This means that the church space is authentically reproduced not only in the horizontal dimensions, but also in the acoustic vertical, i.e. the height of the room. A sound experience that provides fascinating clarity even when played back as a conventional stereo CD.
