Bach's sensational "last-hand version" of the St John Passion from 1749 with an introduction to the work The music of Bach's St John Passion, written immediately after his appointment as Thomaskantor of Leipzig for Holy Week in 1724, is still alive, fresh and a true Baroque delight almost three hundred years later. The two main choruses, 'Herr, unser Herrscher' and 'Ruht wohl, ihr heiligen Gebeine', form the beginning and climax of a vast orchestral-vocal composition in which Bach demonstrates his supreme mastery. Heartfelt, contemplative chorales are interwoven with the events of the Passion, just as captivating arias comment on the biblical texts of the Gospel of John. Baroque musical splendour is always at the forefront of the festive Passion oratorio. What makes the live recording published here of the concert performance on 7 March 2015 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence exceptional are the untapped voices of the singers, who are as young as they are outstanding, the "crystal-clear sound" that is repeatedly praised in the highest terms, and the "tremendous plasticity" of the Bavarian Radio Choir under Peter Dijkstra and, of course, the renowned original sound ensemble Concerto Köln.
