Both sides of Hurts Hurts are unmistakable. The black suits, the white shirts, the severely coiffed slits - in a way, they feel like a trip to the past. The same goes for their music. Both sides of Hurts Hurts are unmistakable. The black suits, the white shirts, the severely coiffed slits - in a way, they feel like a trip to the past. The same goes for their music. On their new album "Surrender", that doesn't change, even though everything is actually different. It all started when the British duo of Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson didn't lock themselves away in their dark little room in Manchester for the album, but travelled the world and wrote music they felt. The fact that it's still charming synth-pop isn't surprising given the success of their last two albums. Besides, Hurts knew from the start where they wanted to go with their third LPm: they wanted to express a different side of themselves. The album title, which was decided before a single song was written, shows that old habits need to be thrown overboard. From the very beginning, their aim was to guarantee an extremely high musical quality. Songs that did not offer this potential simply did not make it onto the album. Instead, the band, who describe themselves as "control freaks", decided to collaborate more and more with other people, including composer Jonas Quant and producers Stuart Price and Ariel Rechtshaid. The result is a ten-song masterpiece of epic and dark, but also danceable feel-good pop songs. One of the tracks that not only made it onto the album, but was also deemed good enough to be the first precursor to the record, is the fast-paced dance song "Some Kind Of Heaven". It was released back on May 28, 2015. With "Rolling Stone", "Lights" and "Slow", another single and two promo tracks followed in advance, confirming the album's wide musical spectrum. "Surrender" is a double-edged weapon. On the one hand, it shows that Hurts, with their unmistakable sound, can stand up to the ranks of the great synth-pop icons, and on the other hand, that there is no need to stick too closely to the old principles. Either way, both sides are worth a listen." Review: "Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson continue to focus on synth pop on their third studio album Surrender, but let other styles seep in as well." (Good Times, December 2015/January 2016) "Work number three combines brisk, elegant electropop, melodically rich choruses, groovy beats and juicy synth salvos." (Audio, December 2015)
