Arguably the best companion piece to his crime comedy was created by director Blake Edwards himself when he commissioned a young studio crew to make an animated Pink Panther film. In fact, the creative minds gave the eponymous diamond a cool, shimmering diamond in the form of a cool purple cat who leads his detective adversary around by the nose to the casual sound of a panther theme. Mancini wouldn't be Mancini if the cool and warm setting of Cortina d' Ampezzo wasn't also immersed in a variety of musical colours and genres in the feature film. His well-known penchant for dancing manifests itself in the samba ("It Had Better Be Tonight"), the shuffle ("Champagne And Quail") and the cha-cha ("Something For Sellers"). But even the ballad, sung with a stuffed trumpet and saxophone ("Royal Blue") or simply woven from notes and strings ("Piano And Strings"), is set in the action. The accordion, whose melodies create an atmosphere of bohemian, musette and Parisian music, is of supreme memory and enjoyment value. This music is never gaudy, but always gentle and, like the panther, moves safely and on quiet feet. If you've fixed your appetite now, get another helping of Mancini with Breakfast at Tiffany's.
