Beecham knew Puccini personally and discussed La Boheme at length with him in London in the 1920s. The 1956 set, featuring Victoria de los Angeles and Jussi Björling in fine form, ranks alongside Callas's De Sabato's Tosca (Naxos 8.110256-57) as one of the finest studio recordings of the opera ever made. On its first UK release, a reviewer for The Gramophone remarked that 'Beecham's ability to bring music to life is indescribable....one falls headlong in love with opera all over again'."
