The songs on this album were meant to sound raw and substantial without being brought to perfection by countless rehearsals. Bill Miller (piano) was instructed to work in a spontaneous manner. The recording process was all about emotion, as Sinatra wanted to write a sonically emotional love letter to Ava Gardner. His goal was to reduce the growing emotional distance that had developed between the couple. In The Wee Small Hours, the first Sinatra album to hit the charts in the US, reached number two and stayed on the chart for 33 weeks.
