What does Steve Reich's minimalism have to do with guitars that sound like insects and tennis pro Andy Roddick? The answer is FOALS. The explanation is a little roundabout. Let's start at the beginning. FOALS is a five-piece dance-rock band currently based in their hometown of Oxford. In 2005 they decided to make music that they themselves would like to dance to. "We wanted to make music that was also technically sophisticated. It's more than just party music, but still danceable," Yannis explains. At first they started calling themselves FOALS (Foals), a reference to Yannis' last name Philippakis, which means little friend of horses in Greek. "I like the name FOALS because it's a nice word and doesn't reveal too much about the band. It sounds fresh and new," says Yannis. Then they got a small rehearsal room and threw around ideas. The tension was rising. "I was absolutely shocked at how critical everyone was of each other," Edwin recalls. Yannis explains, "We are always very self-critical. There was even almost dangerous criticism." Eventually, however, there was a formula that everyone agreed on: mix the drums loud, leave the guitars without chords, lay the riffs over the twelfth fret of the guitar, and splash synth paint here and there. The result is Britzlander-esque, perfectly articulated dance rock, as you can clearly hear on the first single Balloons, on Hummer and on Two Steps Twice.
