Stereo play review: 'If music is the food of love, then play on, says William Sha- kespeare. Mick Fleetwood has taken this motto to heart for more than a quarter of a century. In 1969, the lanky British drummer christened his band Fleetwood Mac's album 'Then Play On'. Today, when the once nutritious blues-rock Mac has long since mutated into the Americanized Big Mac, this oddball drummer is fearlessly agile. After some serious personnel turmoil, the band is currently at peace. Fleetwood have used this respite to take stock of their career in a superb 4-CD box set. Energetic help was provided by producer Ken Caillat and archivist Frank Harding. Fleetwood Mac have always had more to offer than the mainstream routine. As with other big names in the business, different temperaments, preferences and mentalities were productively clashed. After all, the hit factory has played over the years such luminaries as Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, John and Christine McVie, Bob Welch, Stevie Micks, Lindsey Buckingham and, more recently, Rick Vito and Billy Burnette. The Macs have survived the move to sun-drenched California as unscathed as they have the transition from the melancholy blues-pop anthems of Peter Green to the harmonically refined hits of Lindsey Buckingham on the West Coast. "25 Years - The Chain" covers all the major Mac stages in 72 songs, promising an entertaining listen. Alongside selected tracks from the album, you'll find the big hits. Four (rather mediocre) new titles, unreleased live recordings and alternative studio mixes entice arch fans. With the English and American Fleetwood Mac signed to different record labels, this first complete survey of their work is a respectable gift for their silver wedding anniversary."
