The album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City and blends the styles of funk, soul and jazz. The highly intimate and personal album deals with themes such as insecurity, social issues and personal relationships and reached platinum status just two months after its release. The album "Mama's Gun" also features guest appearances by soul singer BETTY WRIGHT and trumpeter Roy Hargrove. The album includes the single "Bag Lady", which reached number one on the R&B chart and the top ten on the Billboard charts thanks to its colorful and artistic music video. "Bag Lady" was nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" category. And the song "Didn't Cha Know?" for Best R&B Song. Rolling Stone magazine praised her for taking risks like STEVIE WONDER and NINA SIMONE once did in their prime, adding that BADU "takes her artistry to a new level. Entertainment Weekly described the album as "a soulful homage to the '70s with live musicians and a smooth-funk sound that would be right at home on a CTI record."
