Elton John's twenty-fourth album was largely recorded a year earlier, in the early months of 1994, just before Elton released new songs with Sir Tim Rice for the soundtrack of The Lion King. At the time of the release of Made In England, the band's frontman was 48 years old. "Believe", the lead single from the album that preceded Made In England, nominated for a Grammy on 20 February, was a serious ballad that became a Top 15 hit in the UK and the US, and also topped the Adult Contemporary chart in the US and reached number one in Italy. Made In England debuted at number 3 on the UK chart on 1 April 1995 (and peaked there) and stayed there for 14 weeks; it reached number 13 in the US and was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA just weeks after its release in May 1995. The album reached the top five in most European countries and topped the charts in Switzerland and Austria. "Made In England is a surprisingly good album," wrote Peter Galvin in Rolling Stone. "It shows an artist who has found himself again and is tapping into the essence of his creative flow."
