Discovery, released in 1979, is the seventh studio album by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). The album was a commercial success, reaching number three in the UK and number ten in the US. Singles from the album, "Don't Bring Me Down" and "Shine a Little Love", reached number one and number four respectively in the UK. Discovery is a concept album whose songs tell the story of a group of astronauts travelling to the moon. The album was produced by Jeff Lynne, who wrote or co-wrote all the songs on the album. The sound of the album is a departure from ELO's earlier albums and is more rock oriented. Lynne has stated that he was influenced by the punk rock movement of the time and wanted to make an album that was "a little more exciting" than previous ELO albums. The songs on the album were praised for their hooks and melodies and for their lyrical content. The album has been cited as an influence by many artists, including Radiohead and Coldplay.
