"Mr.E's Beautiful Blues" was a precursor to the single "Daisies of the Galaxy," a dance-pop set with an amazing variety of material and a fireworks display of guitars in "Estate Sale" where Peter Buck smashed the gears. The themes are largely unchanged from previous albums - E died during the making of the album, and the album opens with "Grace Kelly's Blues," which evokes a funeral in New Orleans - but Daisies also meditates on escape ("Packing Blankets") and longing ("Jeannie's Diary"). A pervasive sense of loneliness and loss persists, however, especially in the deeply moving ballad "It's A Motherfucker" ("being here without you"). It can't all be sweet and easy.
